Major station redevelopment to enhance community and visitor facilities

Ballarat Train Station Redevelopment:

It's no secret that something major is going on at the Ballarat railway station. Works have been underway for months with the foundations for a 405-commuter space car park now constructed. A new free parking facility is great news for Ballarat commuters but it’s only phase one of the redevelopment. Still to come is the construction of a 77 room Quest hotel, a modern and flexible conference centre in the soon to be refurbishment heritage listed Goods Shed and a new bus interchange to service the growing public transport needs of the Ballarat community.

Project benefits:

$51 million into the local economy

140 new construction jobs

30 new ongoing jobs

It's encouraging to see public and private investment being committed into redevelopment projects like this occurring in regional cities such as Ballarat. As Melbourne becomes more congested, regional cities offer a more attractive and viable option as a commuter alternative with improved liveability standards and country lifestyle benefits including affordable housing, employment opportunities, modern health services and education options.

SED's role in the redevelopment project was preparing the Planning Strategy Report for VicTrack.
