Connecting the regional commute

Ballarat to Melbourne commuters will be better connected with the rollout of mobile phone signal boosters on V-Line train carriages. Reception boosters have been installed in a quarter of the fleet with the full rollout expected to be completed by the end of 2018.

The Ballarat line is one of five regional train services to receive the connectivity upgrade along with Geelong, Bendigo, Traralgon and Seymour.

The Victorian Government has partnered with telecommunications networks Telstra, Vodafone and Optus for the $18 million Regional Rail Connectivity Project which will see the construction of 35 new mobile phone towers providing improved commuter connectivity.

We all love being connected in this day and age for both work and play.

Enhanced coverage will allow working commuters to make better use of travel time, potentially increasing productivity while allowing for social activity or simply being able to text or call loved ones letting them know they're on the way home.

SED conducted and produced the Research Report 'Analysis of internet on trains and productivity impacts' which formed an important background case that helped get the project train rolling.

SED is committed to improving the liveability of the regions.
